Virtual what?! Virtual Appliances are fully featured, ready-to-import, Microsoft Hyper-V-based Virtual Machines. To deploy a new Virtual Machine, download a Virtual Appliance, extract it and import it ("Action" -> "Import Virtual Machine") to your Hyper-V host. It's that easy! VHDs are freshly cooked dynamic Hyper-V Virtual Hard Disk Images. You can use a VHD image as a base for the deployment of differencing Virtual Hard Disk images or you can remove the read-only flag and attach the VHD image to your new (or pre-existing) Virtual Machine and boot it straight away. Requirements. To deploy a 14.04 Virtual Appliance, you'll either need: Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (freeware - sign-in w/MS Account req.d). Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, Standard or Datacenter with the Hyper-V Role enabled. Microsoft Windows 8.1. To deploy a 12.04 Virtual Appliance, you'll either need: Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 or Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (freeware - sign-in w/MS Account req.d). Microsoft Windows Server 2012/R2 or 2008 R2 SP1 with the Hyper-V Role enabled. Microsoft Windows 8. What for?! Both methods will save you/your company plenty of time and bandwidth. Some Random VHD[X]/Virtual Appliances Advantages: You won't have to go through the whole setup process again. You'll optimize disk space and bandwitdth consumption by keeping both at a minimum. No excuses: CentOS minimal VHD size is smaller than the official Centos-6.2-x86_64-minimal.iso (187MB VS 321 MB)! Ugh, seriously. I downloaded the Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop vm, but it requires a password for the default "user" login. What are the passwords for the "user" and "root" users? Reply
As the first thing I learned as a computer nerd; read the readme file included in the download. It has the user and password. Reply
Thanks! I only copied the vhdx and vm files over to my server, so I didn't even realize there was a readme. Reply
